Grow Your Own Healthy and Flavorful Organic Vegetables

The benefits of consuming organic products, such as fruits and vegetables, are widely known. However, very few people eat organic food on a regular basis. The high cost of organic food discourages many people from purchasing it. When buying organic vegetables from your local supermarket, you can expect to spend considerably more.

The good news is that anybody with even a modest organic vegetable garden can grow healthy vegetables for a much lower cost than they could buy them off the shelf.

Regardless, some people don’t bother cultivating their own vegetables, since they believe they are limited by space, time, and the knowledge to grow a bountiful vegetable patch. But organic gardening is not as hard as you may expect.

Organic gardening is simply growing plants without the use of conventional chemicals to discourage pests or fertilize the crops. Instead, natural methods and materials are used in an attempt to improve soil health and strengthen the local ecosystem, producing better, healthier food.

Organic gardeners will tell you that vegetables produced by this method contain better nutrition than those sold in supermarkets. That’s because natural materials like compost help keep the soil healthy, instead of the routine depletion and artificial fertilization used in conventional methods. Since organic fruits and vegetables grow in healthy soil and ripen naturally, they also taste better.

With an organic garden, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that your food is truly free of harmful chemical toxins. There is also the added satisfaction of doing the work, and harvesting your own crop. Just think of the fresh air you’ll enjoy, as well as the healthy benefits of exercising while you take care of your garden.

Mulching is one of the primary tips for a successful organic garden. The addition of old organic matter on a regular basis helps to keep the soil healthy and well functioning. Mulching helps the soil retain moisture, suppresses weeds, reduces temperature fluctuations, and can prevent soil crusting. Many organic gardeners notice that upon improving the health of the soil, plant disease problems readily decline.

The biggest reason to grow your own organic vegetables is avoiding the use of commercial pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals. This helps you keep your soil healthy, not just for one growing season, but for many, and it makes sure that you can feed yourself and your family pesticide free foods that are better for your health.

All organic gardeners shun man-made chemicals, but many allow naturally made sprays and concoctions in their gardens. Mechanical devices, such as traps, can also be used for pest control. Another method is to allow the pests’ natural predators to enter the garden, thus allowing nature to take its course.

If organic produce prices stay high and people remain concerned about the food they eat, you might even be able to make a little extra money from your garden. Neighborhood and community gardening projects are also getting a lot more popular.

At the very least, home grown, organic vegetables definitely taste better.

Retractable Awnings Add Value To Your Home.

If you’re looking for a cost effective way to add value to your home while keeping it cooler in summer you need to consider retractable awnings.

You can add a number of different types of shading device to your home to keep you home cooler in summer, like patio covers or awnings. And if you’re considering awnings there are different types of awnings to choose from. What are the benefits of retractable awnings compared to fixed awnings.

Of course a fixed awning is really hard to get down, because it’s fixed. A fixed window cover will work well to keep the shade out, but if the weather gets a little stormy they are a real problem. In high winds fixed awnings will thrash around and perhaps get torn or even get dragged from the house and trashed. Damage to your awnings and house is a real possibility.

If there’s a storm coming you could always of course take them all down but it’s time consuming and hard work, and who is really going to do that? It’s very common for fixed window covers to be damaged.

And there’s more. Because a fixed awning is out in the sun and rain all the time it gets repeatedly wet and dry and sun damaged. Many rot or fade and deteriorate over time, and of course then you need to buy more awnings.

And the new ones will fade and deteriorate as well.

So you are looking at a short lifespan for your fixed awnings, and the cost of replacing them adds up over time, not to mention the hassle of replacing them.

And if the arms of the awnings are made of steel they rust and need to be replaced as well.

But of course there are also positives to fixed awnings compared to retractable awnings, because they are quite a bit cheaper to install initially.

A retractable awning, on the other hand, is much more expensive to buy, but it is more user friendly. Retract it when it’s windy. Keep it in when it’s raining and it stays dry. Keep the material out of the sun except when it’s needed and dramatically extend the life of the awning from avoiding sun damage.

And if it’s a cool day you can retract them too, and put them out on hot days. And if there’s few cool or stormy days coming and you’re worried about your awnings you can get motion and even rain sensors so that they can retract automatically.

Avoid having fixed poles and arms to rot and for kids to run into.

If it’s hot you can keep the house cooler, if it’s not you can retract them and increase the light in the house.

Retractable awnings are definitely more expensive to install initially, but over time the cost evens out compared to fixed awnings, and there’s so many other advantages to having awnings you can retract.

Fried Chicken is Popular Worldwide

It seems like just about everyone loves fried chicken. Many cultures have their own recipe for the tender, crisp taste sensation that we all want. From the Far East to the United States, this delicious meal tempts almost everyone to take a bite.

One of the latest recipes for fried chicken to become popular in the US is Korean fried chicken. They cook their chicken in small pieces with a light, delicate batter. When fully cooked, the chicken is lightly coated with sauce. While it takes some practice to prepare this recipe properly, once you have tasted it you will be amazed. To compensate for the large chickens here in America, cut up some boneless chicken or use wings when you make this delectable treat.

Japanese and Chinese chicken are prepared in a similar fashion, but they use different herbs and spices. Both cuisines prefer to use boneless chicken. For a Chinese flavor, use soy sauce or five-spice powder. For a Japanese flavor, you can use wasabi, sake, or ginger. You can choose to serve these crispy chicken bits plain or with a sauce, which can either be poured over the top or used for dipping. Orange chicken, almond chicken, and lemon chicken all use breaded fried chicken as the basis of the recipe.

If you like Indian food, their fried chicken use spices like fennel, pepper, udad dal, mustard seeds and turmeric. Dip the marinated chicken in beaten egg white, and then roll them in breadcrumbs before frying in hot oil.

As this shows, people all over the world like their fried chicken! Just by changing the ingredients in the marinade or the breading, you can come up with quite a world tour of chicken.

South American recipes feature ingredients like lime juice, corn flour or corn meal, hot sauce and garlic. To make it more Italian, use crushed red pepper, oregano, garlic, chili powder, onion powder, dry mustard and add salt and pepper to taste. Cook it in olive oil.

You can also vary your cooking method to make this dish different. Oven frying is a great way to enjoy fried chicken without all the fat. Oven frying can still give you a crunchy chicken full of moist goodness. If you use skinless chicken, be sure to marinate it in buttermilk to help seal in the moisture. Add a coating of seasoned flour to seal in the flavor and provide a nice crispness to the outer surface. You will be very pleased with this low fat chicken meal that will taste as good cold as it was hot from the oven.

Alternatively, you can try the traditional method of frying in a cast iron skillet. This method can make a simple breading of flour, pepper and salt into an amazing dining experience. Cast iron has the ability to cook the chicken through while creating a thick, crisp crust on the outside. This method was used by many generations of cooks as the preferred method of preparing chicken.

Grisette

Wood Blewits are the twin fungi of Blewits (Lepista saeva). They grow in woods, orchards, parks and along tree-lined lanes. In contrast to Blewits, the whole fruit-body is a beautiful amethyst purple when young. This colouring disappears with age and changes into cloudy purple or beige-brown, which is a feature of both the caps and gills.

Clitocybe wbularis is edible but of a poor quality, though some mushroom-pickers collect it and add it to a mixture of other mushrooms or pickle it in vinegar. It is advisable to scald the sliced mushrooms be[bre proceeding further, otherwise they can cause indigestion.

The reddish-brown Amanita umbrinolutea can also he frequently seen. It has a dirty-whitish volva, and its stipe has also transverse irregular stripes. All the above-mentioned Amanita species are edible; some mushroom-pickers even consider them tasty. Their disadvantage lies in their fragility and therelbre they do not transport very well. Finally it is worth noting once again that, when such Amanita species are being gathered, constant vigilance must be exercised to avoid confusing them with the Death Cap (Amanita phatloides), which has a similarly tall volva at the stipe’s base; however, the Grisette is always without the characteristic ring.

Edible mushrooms can be found not only in forests, but also in meadows, pastures and on grassy slopes. Blewits are among the most substantial and tasty. They even attract the inexperienced eye because they often grow in circles in patches of dark green grass, which ate a strikingly deeper green than the rest of the sward. A similar phenomenon may be observed in the Fairy-ring champignon (Marasmius oreades) and is due to the production of nitrogen, which enriches the soil and provides additional nourishment for green plants. This is one example of the symbiosis of certain fungus mycelia and adjacent green plants.

The flesh of the Blewits has a pleasant mushroom taste and scent, the stipe is short and looks as if it had been stained with ink. Blewits are excellent edible mushrooms, and can be prepared in a number of ways. Their utility is further increased by the fact that they can still embellish our diet when other edible mushrooms are on the decline.

In calm weather conditions it is possible to smell the scent of Clitocybe adorn at a distance of several metres away, especially when several specimens arc growing together in one spot. This species is edible and best utilized when added to mixtures of other, less aromatic mushrooms. It grows predominantly in spruce forests amongst rotting needles. It loses its typical scent when it is dried out.

Jew’s Ear

The Jew’s Ear likes to grow on the common elder and on false acacia. Its very supple fruit-bodies are bone hard when dry, but become pliable again when moistened. Some related species which grow in Asia arc used in cooking. Tremella mesenterica is often found on the dead branches of deciduous trees, usually hornbeams and oaks.

The species is often characterized by large round pores in the form of tubular openings about 2-4 mm wide, which are interspersed with minute, rust-coloured pores, through which drops of a hot bitter liquid are excreted. The fruit-bodies also secrete surplus water in this way.

These drops are best visible on young growths, which secrete large amounts of this liquid. This process takes place only in favourable damp weather conditons. The old dry fruit-bodies are hard, frail and almost black.

Inonotus hispidus is an annual fungus which attacks orchards with apple and occasionally pear trees, causing great damage. It prefers older trees as their central wooden column rots quickly.

Pseudolydnum gelatinosurn is characterized by its tough, gelatinous, tongue-shaped fruit-bodies and by the soft dense teeth on its underside. The colour of the fruit-bodies varies, ranging from pure milky- white and bluish shades to a dark amber-brown. P. gelatinoston is an edible species but due to its second-rate quality it is rarely collected. Usually it can be found growing on pine and spruce stumps.

Spring and summer means the return of barbecues that most of us enjoy or the occasional evening entertaining friends or family in an outdoor setting. It is because we relish our outdoor life that we build and decorate our patio or deck.

To insure the comfort of our guests and to maximize our success as a great host we need the right patio furniture. By choosing carefully our patio furniture we will not only provide a relaxing atmosphere to our guests but will improve our outdoor surroundings. There is on the market today patio furniture for any budget and for all decor. Choosing the right kind is important.

Patio furniture should be chosen based on the following characteristics: Good quality to withstand the activities that we will impose on it Good looks to fit the decor of the house and the personality, style and taste of the owner

Whether you choose wood, metal, wicker or plastic is a matter of personal preference as today’s materials are all durable and most as also very stable.

This article will examine the differences between two different woods, Cedar and Teak.

Teak is a very hard wood native to Southeast Asia often used for large patios areas. It is highly weather resistant, and its natural oils makes it suitable for exposed areas, where durability is a factor.

Teak was very popular in the 1950s and 1960s in a style often known as Danish Modern, it seems to enjoy today a second boom in popularity.

Teak remains cool even under a very hot sun, and it does not splinter. These qualities have made it a most sought after material not only for today’s furniture but also for vintage furniture.

With all these qualities it is not surprising that is also one of the most expensive type of patio furniture, although many manufacturers of teak furniture are taking initiatives to bring worldwide prices down and make it more affordable for more people.

Another wood high on the popularity list is Cedar. It can resist to wet weather but also to extreme dryness without splitting. It is an excellent choice to keep insects and even termites away due to its strong odor.

Used for garden furniture as well as construction of pergolas, Cedar is an excellent outdoor wood as it ages and dries without much changes. It will not warp, contract, or splinter. Any kind of paint or other finishes can be used and it is very easy to work with cedar for do-it-yourselfers.

I am sure many of you know the warm feeling, the calming effect that smelling cedar wood has on us. It is more affordable than teak and yet it will still make your patio a very special place.

Which you will choose is really a matter of individual preference as both these woods will give you years of satisfaction and use with relatively little maintenance. If care and maintenance is the prevalent decision maker then teak should be the winner.

Methods In Controlling Animal Pests

March 9, 2009

by Steve Karback

Pest control is an extremely important aspect of any landscaping project. It is because of the fact that pests are bound to be drawn to this natural habitat that has been created, they can get plenty of foliage, moist soil and a tranquil breeding area. We discuss below a few ideas that will help you take control over pests that love to wreak havoc on your beautiful landscape.

Mosquitoes love damp and moist areas and breed in small pools and shallow puddles. If your yard has many of these troubled areas, you need to eradicate them by using mosquito repellant or something that will draw them like a magnet, to their impending doom. Using a repellant is not a good idea if they contain chemicals that can damage your plants. Mosquito magnets on the other hand can be an effective way to rid them from your landscape. A magnet emits a gashouse odor that smells like human breath and mosquitoes are attracted to the machine and killed.

Whether or not you choose to use a magnet to draw mosquitoes, there are some things you need to do to cut mosquito growth in your yard. The following tips for mosquito control is as follows:

1.) Make sure that your yard is free of stagnant water. You can fill up puddles and treat the landscape with a pesticide. 2.) If your landscape has a birdbath, make sure to use only clean water on a daily basis to ensure that larvae do not live. 3.) In the case of a pool on your landscape, you need to keep it clean and well aerated. Chlorine treating of the water is a definite must. 4.) In the same way you aerate a pool the same thing must be done to ponds on a consistent basis. 5.) If you have aquatic plants to make your landscape look good, they are also mosquito havens. Make certain to have the proper check on the growth of your aquatic plants. 6.) Make sure to fill the pond(s) with fish and other aquatic life that will eat insects and mosquitoes. 7.)Use drip irrigation to keep your soil extra dry.

By following a simple set of instructions, you can very easily maintain a check of the mosquito population on your property.

Earwigs or similar types of insects are very common in landscape gardens that have mounds of lawn debris, leaves and foliage. Below are a few important tips to remember when dealing with earwigs.

1.) Make certain to keep your landscape clean of any debris and dry leaves. 2.) Using mulch can lead to earwig infestation and you need to try to avoid it in case you do not want to wind up with an uncontrollable earwig situation. 3.)Make sure to use a drip irrigation and not a sprinkler type to make sure your landscape surface is dry. 4.) You can also install bird friendly features in your landscaping. Most birds really love to feast on earwigs and various other types of insects. By taking some tips into consideration, you can successfully deal with earwigs and any other kind of pests encountered.

Pests in the animal form are just as common as insects in most landscape gardens. The absolute worst thing about dealing with animal pests is the laws in certain areas make it illegal to kill certain types of animals. The best way to deal with animal pests is to discourage them from entering your property.

Some common ways to discourage vermin such as; ground hogs, moles, rabbits and other pests is to do the following:

1.) Make sure your property is fenced correctly. 2.) Remove any areas that animal pests can be used as a hiding place such as; tall grasses and weeds and mounds of leaves. 3.) Using motion devices such as pin wheels around the garden will make timid animals like a groundhog very afraid. 4.) Use live traps around areas that are frequented by animal pests to capture and remove them alive in a far off location.

Live animal traps are the kind that allow the predatory animal to be captured alive. The animal stuck in the trap can then be released in a distant location. Of all the live animal traps that are available, the havahart traps are very popular and the best. The traps are quite easy to use and available in a wide range of sizes so you might as well catch even the hiding plant mites. The best part about their design is that they are safe around pets and kids. Havahart traps can be purchased online directly from the website: www.havahart.com.

Organic Pest Control involves using common organic products to form powerful pest concoctions. Organic methods employ the use of an insecticide soap, NEEM oil, horticulture oil, ground sabadilla lily seeds, pyrethrins (in powder form and dusted onto leaves), etc. Many of these organic products are available at home and with minimal knowledge you can easily make an anti-pest treatment right at home.

So Many Batters, so Little Time

March 9, 2009

by KC Kudra

There are many people who prefer to cook their chicken without a batter, but there are many more who crave that crispy crunch of battered chicken. You can batter whole pieces, wings, or nuggets or breast strips… they all turn out delicious. People all over the world use batter on their chicken in one form or another. There are almost as many different batter recipes as there are chickens!

The World of Batter

Different batters can be made using different flours. Try corn meal, rice flour, wheat flour, or graham flour. Ethnic recipes for chicken often use different flours in the mix. Each area has their own special mixture of herbs and spices that give the chicken a distinctive flavor.

An example would be a batter recipe from India that combines nutmeg, red chili powder, ginger, cloves, and curds with graham flour. This batter is used on boiled chicken meat, which is then fried until crisp. A good taste of Asia can be found by marinating your boneless chicken in soy sauce, five spice powder, onion, and garlic and sesame oil. Batter the chicken in rice flour, salt, water, and baking powder. The result is a distinctive flavor of Asia with a crisp translucent coating.

Someone else may swear by beer batter. The yeasty quality of the beer makes a light batter with a tangy flavor. A different way to get the tangy flavor is to soak your chicken in buttermilk before dredging in seasoned flour. This creates a mixture that turns to a batter on the chicken before frying.

You can also find different ways to get that crunch. Some cooks prefer to use crushed cornflakes; others like seasoned breadcrumbs or crushed crackers. Some people prefer wet batters that fry up crisp on the chicken. Panko breadcrumbs from Japan create a lovely light, crisp coating. For those who want a light batter without the extra crunch, try tempura batter.

For those who like southern fried chicken recipes, there are almost as many of those to choose from as there are people who love fried chicken. Some southern batters are as simple as mixing flour, salt, pepper, and milk. Others are more complicated with herbs and spices added to the mix.

The Cooking Controversy

You will find many different opinions on whether you should deep fry your battered chicken, fry it in an oil-filled cast iron pan, or use a pressure cooker. Each method has its own fans that declare their way is best. Those who prefer deep-frying will say the quick cooking time and lack of spatter makes their way superior. The cast iron camp will talk about the perfect crisp to the chicken’s surface and the even heating. Those who prefer pressure cookers will need to brown the chicken first, and then cook it in the pressure cooker. The chicken is done in about 15 minutes in this method, but be sure you do not open the cooker before all the pressure has dissipated.

With all these batter choices, you will be busy for several years trying new recipes. Enjoy the flavors of battered chicken; there are so many different ones to try!
