This article instructs the reader on the things that have to be taken care of when building a deck for the house. It also gives useful tips on factors like materials and size of the deck that have to be planned thoroughly before starting with the construction of the deck.

Constructing a deck is not impossible for a layman who desires to do so. However, since it involves a lot of skill and technical knowledge it is better not to attempt it and hire a professional deck builder who is more equipped to do the job.

The fact is that a deck is an extremely valuable addition to your house. Having a deck enables you to have wonderful moments with family, pets and friends in the quiet seclusion of your home while experiencing the beautiful outdoors. When building a deck that can be used an a natural extension of the house, you have the option of selecting your favorite spot in the garden that offers a scenic view and gives you a great sense of peace. In addition, such a deck would be the ideal place to host parties and barbecues where guests can have a great time relaxing and unwinding.

There are certain things that you need to keep in mind while starting with the construction of the deck. To begin with, you need to have the necessary permit before you undertake this project. Knowledge of the construction codes and zoning laws would also be very useful before you plan your deck. Again, even though you do have the choice of building the deck yourself to suit your convenience, an expert is more likely to provide satisfactory results.

You need to remember that an elaborate plan of the deck is needed before you embark on the actual construction. This plan should include the measurements, location of the deck, the technical details and other specifications that are important aspects of the deck. If this plan also has a list of the legal formalities that have to be completed, it will help you a lot. Another thing you need to keep in mind is the direction of the sun when building your deck. The size of the deck, the tools and materials needed for construction all have to be gone into thoroughly before you start with the work. When it comes to the size, try and see to it that it complements the size of the house.

As far as the materials are concerned, wood is the basic material that is used even though there is also a great demand for wood composites. It makes sense to opt for high quality wood as your deck will have a great look that will last for many years. Generally, cedar, pressure treated lumber and redwood will give you a fantastic look and feel for the deck.

Facts about Victorian railings

December 23, 2008

by Adam Peters

This article gives information about Victorian railings. It emphasizes on the beauty and dignity that this style of railing can bestow to a deck.

Victorian railings are so called as they symbolize the architecture and style of the Victorian age. During this time, England witnessed the industrial revolution but this age was specifically named after Queen Victoria who reigned in splendor over England from 1837 to 1901. The distinctive feature of this style is a sense of majesty and imposing beauty.

In recent times, Victorian railings have begun to be used as a statement of style. However, what one needs to remember is that during the Victorian era houses were designed in a magnificent and opulent manner. In fact, the houses as well as the designs of the railings, pathways and doors were seen to indicate the social position of the owner. This is especially the reason why Victorian railings have intricate designs and are very high on visual impact. Having such railings on the deck can radically alter the look of the deck. The only requirement for installing these railings, however, is that that the house should also be able to match up to the beauty of the railings and should present a splendid appearance.

If you have decided to opt for Victorian railings on the deck, it is essential that you select the appropriate materials for constructing them. If you live in an area that receives plenty of rainfall or is susceptible to moisture, then wood should not be used as wood decomposes very rapidly in such conditions. In this scenario, iron can be used as it is very sturdy and is blessed with longevity if it is protected with a high quality lacquer finish so that it is not affected by corrosive elements in the atmosphere.

In the absence of such a finish, iron might also be vulnerable to moisture. Apart from this, iron also has the benefit of precision manufacturing whereby complicated and beautiful designs in the Victorian style can be obtained from this material. If you opt for vinyl railings, you do not have to worry about moisture. The problem with vinyl, though, is that it gets damaged in hot weather conditions. However, with modern technology producing vinyl that can withstand hot weather conditions, vinyl can be a good option for Victorian railings.

If your house has been designed in the Victorian style of architecture, then constructing a deck and railings in the same style would present a grand and beautiful appearance. Do make sure to comply with the building codes applicable to your area when installing these railings, so that you are safe from accidents of any nature.

If you have any doubts about Victorian railings as far as materials, designs and installation is concerned then you can rely on the Internet to provide you with all the information that you want.

Deck Railing Styles Should Enhance Your Home

October 21, 2008

by Adam Peters

This article is about installing your deck and deck railing styles of your choice. It gives directions on the process.

Installing Deck Railing Easily

Installing your deck may sound like a complicated affair, but it’s easier than you think with easy to follow directions. Sometimes, the most difficult parts of making a deck are choosing from the different deck railing styles available today. If you’re not the DIY type of person or don’t have the correct tools and equipment, you may want to hire a deck contractor or get help from a friend experienced in installing a deck. However, with good directions, installing a deck is not that complicated.

Installing Deck Railings

Deck railings serve two purposes: to provide safety for your family and friends and to bring beauty to your deck and home. They are the most visible part of your deck so you want them to be attractive. They also need to meet the requirements set by the law involving the distance (maximum 4 inches) as well as height requirements (between 36 and 42 inches). When installing your deck railings, you’ll find many different styles and designs available. If you have the correct tools and skills, you can have your deck railing installed in a couple of days.

Baluster Spacing and Installation

When installing your balusters, it’s important that you space them evenly on your deck. Assuming the distance between two posts is 60 inches, your baluster width is 2″ and the required spacing between the two balusters is 4″, you add 4″ to the 2″ to get a total of 6″. Divide 60″ by 6″ and you get 10. This is the total number of balusters that you’ll need for your deck railing. To figure out the exact spacing, multiply 10 (number of balusters needed) by the width of each baluster (10X2=20). Subtract this figure from the distance between posts (60-20=40). Divide this number by the number of spacing plus one (10+1=11 then 40/11=3.64 inches). It’s actually easier than it seems, especially if you have basic math skills and a tape measure.

Working with Railing Posts

Installing the rail posts includes measuring the distance required for the posts and cutting them with a circular saw or table saw the required length, making sure to cut a 45-degree bevel on the outside bottom of the post. Be sure the post is flush against the joist and drill two holes through the post and the joist then secure them together with a 5-inch long carriage bolt. The balusters need to be cut from 2X2 stock. Clamp together 6 pieces and cut them all at the same time. Install the top and bottom rails 2″ thick and 4 inches wide spaced the correct distance apart. Measure both rails for fixing the balusters. Nail them in place, making sure the nails are not too big so they don’t splinter the wood. Stand back and admire your work.
