Why Adding Variety is Important When Preparing Food

Feeding small children can be a real chore and it is even harder when they are fussy eaters. It is very important to make sure small children get adequate nutrition. Fortunately, there are ways of making them eat even if they don’t want to. It is a good idea to have a selection of favorites to fall back on, including hotdogs, pizza, homemade chicken noodle soup, crockpot chicken noodle soup, and lasagna.

It might be more of a chore but the easiest thing to do is to prepare a few different dishes so your child can decide for himself what he want to eat. You could even try asking what they are in the mood for. If the child thinks that he can make the decision about food himself sometimes, he will be happy to eat what you have made especially for him. You can do what you like with his suggestions, of course. He might suggest homemade chicken noodle soup, in which case you can make a crockpot chicken noodle soup if you are going to be out all day and won’t have much time before his mealtime.

It is a good idea to encourage your child to sample everything you prepare. Many children don’t like the look of a food (“it’s a yucky color” or “it’s looks slimy” are common excuses) but your child won’t know what the food tastes like until he tries it, so encourage him to take a no thank you bite. In this way, he will get to taste the food and he might actually like it and ask for more.

Another way that you can encourage your child to eat is to give the food names of their favorite cartoon or fictional character. Atomic Betty beans or Patrick pancakes can bring a smile to your child’s face and a full belly. Children identify with their favorite shows, and if they think that they are eating their favorite cartoons food, then they will most likely clean their plates.

Making fun, colorful dishes can encourage your child to eat. Red, green, and yellow bell peppers add color and you can call this Christmas casserole. You can make chicken noodle soup and call it Daffy Duck soup or something, just to make sure it is eaten.

Children are very particular and even though they are little, they know what they like. If something does not look appetizing to them, you will have very little chance of getting them to eat it. They do not understand that it is good for them; they depend on you for that.

If you like to cook, one way that you can encourage your child to eat is to let them prepare the meal with you. When you do this, they will see the ingredients, which are being added and feel like they are a part of the cooking process. They are more likely to eat what they prepare because they are proud to have done it. They would much rather have some homemade chicken noodle soups than the stuff in the red and white can.

If there is a food, your child doesn’t like, but it is necessary for the recipe, you can mince it in the food processor when your child is in another room, before adding it to the pot. Your child won’t be able to see or taste it in the final dish but they will be getting the nutrition from the hidden ingredient.

When you are trying to feed your child, it is sometimes necessary to use alternative methods and even alternative ingredients. The main thing to remember when dealing with kids is to be as flexible as possible and know where and when to pick your battles. No one wants to make dinner time a battleground and with some careful selections and a little flexibility, it does not have to be.

Strawberry Fields Forever

Mmmmm… Can you remember biting into a big, sweet, juicy strawberry when you were little? Can you feel the juice running down your chin? Strawberries can create some vivid food memories for many people because they are so good! Today, you can get strawberries at the market almost all year round thanks to quick shipping, but they are not the same as eating those freshly picked, perfectly ripe berries right out of your own garden.

Strawberries are really quite easy to grow and the taste of fresh is incredible. Whether you have a love of the little fruit on their own, or you love them with cream and sugar, once you find a small carton, there are plenty of things that you can do with it.

Today’s strawberries originate from a plant native to America. The large berries we see now are a hybrid of a South American strawberry that was crossed with a North American strawberry. This allowed the southern plant to survive the cooler climates in the north. Strawberries have long been a symbol of health and luxury in Europe.

Strangely enough, strawberries were considered poisonous in Argentina until the middle of the 19th century. While those plants varied greatly in shape, size, and flavor, they all bore the well-known red color and heart-shaped fruit that we all adore so much.

Eating strawberries raw is probably the most popular method of serving this fruit. You may be surprised to learn that strawberries can be added to many different dishes to add color and flavor. One easy way to prepare a strawberry dessert is to chop the berries into small chunks. Place the pieces in a bowl and cover them with water. Generously spread white sugar over the top. Add some ice cubes and set the bowl in the refrigerator to chill for a few hours. What you get in the end is a delicious icy treat that will please the most finicky palate in summer.

Some people prefer a more complex flavor, or a little more tartness to their berries. A good way to add more complexity to your strawberries is to dip them into some good balsamic vinegar and powdered sugar. The sharpness of the vinegar adds a nice contrast to the sweetness of the sugar. This makes a simple, intriguing end to a meal.

Strawberries are not just for dessert. Add some sliced strawberries to a spinach salad to add color and sweetness. A dressing made of honey, mustard, balsamic vinegar and rice vinegar makes a nice accompaniment to the spinach, berries, red onion slices, and caraway seeds. Eat this for a light lunch or serve it as a side salad at a dinner for instant compliments.

Alternatively, you can try this fresh spinach salad. Remove all the stems from the spinach leaves so you only have the tender greens. Slice the strawberries diagonally to create an interesting look. Toss them into the greens with a little Gorgonzola cheese and some tasty homemade croutons for some crunch. Top it all off with a little dab of ranch dressing and some freshly ground black pepper for a delightful salad that is a wonderful marriage of textures and flavors.

Do not relegate strawberries only to shortcake. They have a lot more to offer than the traditional dessert. Strawberries are nutritious and flavorful, and are the ideal berry to serve. There is a reason the strawberry is everyone’s favorite.

Do you often find that nobody wants to eat the heel ends of the bread in your house? Maybe you often find whole packages of bread, which you have forgotten to eat before opening a new loaf. Whichever the reason, you don’t have the throw the bread out because there are plenty of uses for it. You can use stale bread in some of the best crockpot recipes, such as chicken crockpot recipes for example.

First, there are a few general uses, which can be addressed right away. If you have small bits, you can put them in the oven at a very low heat to dry them out completely and then the you can either ground up, with a meat grinder, or simply crushed with a rolling pin.

This is a very good way of making your own breadcrumbs for stuffing recipes or fried scallops without having to buy them from the store. If you have larger pieces of bread left over, you can cut them into small cubes and dry them to make croutons or cut them into small pieces for crackers. These are both very good with soup. Actually, this taste better than normal crackers and you can use fresh or stale slices to make them.

If you have hard, dry pieces of bread, heat up a well-buttered griddle and dip the bread into hot salted water before browning it quickly on both sides. This traditional dish is a great remedy for a cold morning when you realize that you only have dry bread in the house and you want to eat something with butter or syrup.

You might like to make a sandwich spread or tasty side dish with your stale bread. If you are using rye bread, put some bacon fat in the frying pan. When it is hot, you can use it to brown both sides of the bread and put a poached egg on each slice. Between the egg and the bacon fat, the bread will get moist again. You might like to serve this with barbecue sauce, catsup or another type of sauce or salsa.

If you have a lot of stale bread left over and you don’t want to make healthy crockpot recipes with it, you might want to make the mouthwatering dessert Brown Betty. To make this wonderful dish, you need to layer stale bread slices over chopped apple in a well-greased baking dish. Start with bread on the bottom and add apple layers followed by bread layers. Add cinnamon and brown sugar, more if the apples are a tart variety, to every layer. Finish with a layer of apple and top with breadcrumbs mixed with butter. Then cook this dish covered for a while, before baking it for an hour. It is beautiful when served with ice cream or confectioner’s sugar.

As you can see, there are plenty of uses for stale bread, so take some time, and think about how you can use those hard-as-glass slices in crockpot recipes!
