Properly Planning Your Landscape

If you want to make the most attractive and beneficial use of your grounds, you’ll want to make sure you plan your landscaping very well. Most people take the idea of pathways, coverage, foliage and so forth for granted, having no idea how much thought and planning it requires to get it just right. Properly planning ahead is the key to having a great looking landscape.

You’ll want to consider several elements in your design, including access (walkways), lighting (if any), coverage, and color. One of the most often overlooked plants are trees, as they are not only to be incorporated in the beginning, but must be accommodated over time as they grow and take up more space and ad more beauty to the landscape.

Remember that trees have an annual cycle of growth, leaf shedding, flowering, and so forth. Some trees do this more than others, with evergreens shedding almost all year round and larger-leafed trees shedding all at once. Be aware of this and how it will affect your landscape’s overall look.

The overall design of your landscape, whether it be a huge undertaking or just a few square feet of yard, is to think is layers. Think of the background, middle ground, and foreground and what elements will be in them to create the texture and layers you want. Also be aware of how you’ll need to get through these areas to work with the plants, care for them, or just get around the space in daily activity. This is where walkways, often hidden by the middle ground elements, will come into play.

Use trees to screen the property and, if needed, to provide shade for the plants that enjoy that so that you can incorporate variety into your landscape design. The prettier, flowering plants are usually the foreground plants, but you should be aware of their flowering cycles so that there are no bare spots during the year. Also be aware of how large some plants can get and be sure to include plant selection plans for your design.

Finally, you should begin by planting the larger plants (trees, shrubs, etc.) first and work your way down the list to the smallest and easiest of the group. Seasonal planting should also be incorporated so you aren’t having to do all of the work at once. Some plants prefer fall plantings (most trees, for instance) and some prefer spring planting (most flowers). Others can be planted at almost any time so long as they have a good climate for recovery (anytime in summer).

Most importantly, don’t forget to stop and smell the roses and enjoy your beautiful landscape and garden! Watch it through the year as it goes through changes and start planning your improvements for next year. That’s a big part of the fun!

Some homeowners may not give proper attention to handrails but this tiny detail in your deck railing also has a big contribution to the overall functionality and style of the deck. Handrails are purposely designed to provide safety to homeowners as they climb to the deck. Apart from this, they also provide greater style to the deck and railings as well. You can easily find a handrail that covers both style and functionality without compromising its cost. With the advent of technology today and the gaining popularity of deck and outdoor living, manufacturers have found ways to let ordinary people afford the elegant and functional handrails and other deck components.

Today, handrails are made from various materials so you can have the freedom to choose of a handrail that would blend with your personal style and your needs as well. Some of the materials used on handrails today include wood, iron, steel and aluminum. All these offer many advantages so you just need to properly and meticulously study all these materials in order to reap the best benefits.

In the early days, handrails are only made from simple pieces so they are often ignored by many, giving greater importance on the appearance of the deck and railings. They are just simple pieces of pipes that are installed next to the walls, stairs, and ramps. But today, you can find handrails that are made from steel, wrought iron, aluminum, wood. Apart from this, handrails of today are elaborately designed. Homeowners can now choose from the excellent array of designs and materials of handrails. Even contractors and architects can help you find the best design in order to complete the look and feel of your stairs.

For those who are still novice when it comes to choosing the handrails whether for stairs, balconies and other applications, there are some considerations or factors that one has to know including the local regulation, cost, maintenance, design and a lot more. To know the codes of your area, you may consult to the accessibility standards that are included in the Americans With Disabilities Act or the ADA for the stairs and ramps. In most cases, the recommended dimension of the handrail is already included and the height should be between 34″ and 38″.

Handrails today are offered in steel, brass, glass, wood, banister and balustrades. Some actually prefer to use handrails that are made of metal while others want to have a more elaborate design such as the ones made from glass, iron and wrought iron. Meanwhile, the balustrades were once made from concrete and the cut stone are now made from materials that are light weight.

The metal handrails are preferred by homeowners who want their handrails to last a lifetime. You must know that wood and glass may easily break or succumb to damage. And the wrought iron can be relatively expensive and may need regular maintenance so this is not a practical choice.

As a conclusion, handrails must be durable and attractive enough so you can achieve full satisfaction.

The Trick To Taking Care Of Saint Augustine Grass

Saint Augustine Grass is one of the best types of grass to grow in warm, humid areas, and is very popular in Florida. It can grow well in a variety of soil types, as long as you know a few basics about how to properly take care of it. During dry times, water the Saint Augustine lawn for around a half or an hour with sprinklers two times a week. When it is the wet season of the year, only water the grass when it is needed. You will be able to tell that the lawn needs watering when the grass begin to wilt. The individual blades will begin to fold, and turn from green to a more bluish-green color.

When it is time to mow your Saint Augustine grass, put the mower on a high setting. If you set the mower to cut the grass too low, it will damage the grass and reduce the grass’s root growth. When you mow the lawn, go ahead and leave the extra grass clippings on top of the grass. These clippings actually put nutrients back into the soil, keeping the grass healthy. Leaving the clippings also can reduce the need to fertilize the grass. If there is too much grass and the clippings are in piles all over the lawn, then just let the clippings dry out and then scatter them over the lawn.

Approximately two weeks after the beginning of springtime, it is a good idea to apply a low-phosphorous fertilizer to the grass. If you do a good job of fertilizing your lawn, it will greatly increase the overall health of your lawn. Proper fertilization can even reduce Saint Augustine’s susceptibility to weeds, insects, and disease. However, if you over-apply the fertilizer, or the fertilizer does not actually get to the grass, there is a possiblity that the fertilizer will leach through the soil or runoff the grass and go into the sewer system.

You can apply the fertilizer again anywhere from once to five times through the fall season. You do not need to do this, but it will make the lawn greener. Even with the best of care, however, Saint Augustine grass is generally not able to stay green throughout the winter months, but should become greener again after fertilization when it is springtime.

If you begin to notice that your lawn is getting brown patches with bare roots showing throughout, it probably means that you have a bug problem. The kind of bug that causes these brown spots are called chinch bugs. You will need to purchase insecticide that is specifically labeled to kill chinch bugs to get rid of them.

Methods In Controlling Animal Pests

March 9, 2009 by Steve Karback

by Steve Karback

Pest control is an extremely important aspect of any landscaping project. It is because of the fact that pests are bound to be drawn to this natural habitat that has been created, they can get plenty of foliage, moist soil and a tranquil breeding area. We discuss below a few ideas that will help you take control over pests that love to wreak havoc on your beautiful landscape.

Mosquitoes love damp and moist areas and breed in small pools and shallow puddles. If your yard has many of these troubled areas, you need to eradicate them by using mosquito repellant or something that will draw them like a magnet, to their impending doom. Using a repellant is not a good idea if they contain chemicals that can damage your plants. Mosquito magnets on the other hand can be an effective way to rid them from your landscape. A magnet emits a gashouse odor that smells like human breath and mosquitoes are attracted to the machine and killed.

Whether or not you choose to use a magnet to draw mosquitoes, there are some things you need to do to cut mosquito growth in your yard. The following tips for mosquito control is as follows:

1.) Make sure that your yard is free of stagnant water. You can fill up puddles and treat the landscape with a pesticide. 2.) If your landscape has a birdbath, make sure to use only clean water on a daily basis to ensure that larvae do not live. 3.) In the case of a pool on your landscape, you need to keep it clean and well aerated. Chlorine treating of the water is a definite must. 4.) In the same way you aerate a pool the same thing must be done to ponds on a consistent basis. 5.) If you have aquatic plants to make your landscape look good, they are also mosquito havens. Make certain to have the proper check on the growth of your aquatic plants. 6.) Make sure to fill the pond(s) with fish and other aquatic life that will eat insects and mosquitoes. 7.)Use drip irrigation to keep your soil extra dry.

By following a simple set of instructions, you can very easily maintain a check of the mosquito population on your property.

Earwigs or similar types of insects are very common in landscape gardens that have mounds of lawn debris, leaves and foliage. Below are a few important tips to remember when dealing with earwigs.

1.) Make certain to keep your landscape clean of any debris and dry leaves. 2.) Using mulch can lead to earwig infestation and you need to try to avoid it in case you do not want to wind up with an uncontrollable earwig situation. 3.)Make sure to use a drip irrigation and not a sprinkler type to make sure your landscape surface is dry. 4.) You can also install bird friendly features in your landscaping. Most birds really love to feast on earwigs and various other types of insects. By taking some tips into consideration, you can successfully deal with earwigs and any other kind of pests encountered.

Pests in the animal form are just as common as insects in most landscape gardens. The absolute worst thing about dealing with animal pests is the laws in certain areas make it illegal to kill certain types of animals. The best way to deal with animal pests is to discourage them from entering your property.

Some common ways to discourage vermin such as; ground hogs, moles, rabbits and other pests is to do the following:

1.) Make sure your property is fenced correctly. 2.) Remove any areas that animal pests can be used as a hiding place such as; tall grasses and weeds and mounds of leaves. 3.) Using motion devices such as pin wheels around the garden will make timid animals like a groundhog very afraid. 4.) Use live traps around areas that are frequented by animal pests to capture and remove them alive in a far off location.

Live animal traps are the kind that allow the predatory animal to be captured alive. The animal stuck in the trap can then be released in a distant location. Of all the live animal traps that are available, the havahart traps are very popular and the best. The traps are quite easy to use and available in a wide range of sizes so you might as well catch even the hiding plant mites. The best part about their design is that they are safe around pets and kids. Havahart traps can be purchased online directly from the website: www.havahart.com.

Organic Pest Control involves using common organic products to form powerful pest concoctions. Organic methods employ the use of an insecticide soap, NEEM oil, horticulture oil, ground sabadilla lily seeds, pyrethrins (in powder form and dusted onto leaves), etc. Many of these organic products are available at home and with minimal knowledge you can easily make an anti-pest treatment right at home.

The Dirty Secret About Products For Roof Cleaning

March 8, 2009 by Chris Webster

by Chris Webster

If you’ve noticed the black algae stains on your roof then you’re probably already in the process of trying to find an effective roof cleaning product. I have a bit of bad news for you, however. The truth is that there really aren’t any very good products on the market right now.

I know that a right-out-of-the-box solution is what you’re hoping for, even those of you that are serious do-it-yourself enthusiasts. But the truth of the matter is that the best roof cleaning concoction can be made with common household items. If you have a laundry room in your home then you probably have what is required.

The reason I come down so hard on most products for cleaning a roof is that they tend to require the use of a pressure cleaner in order to be effective. Ask any roofer or home professional and they will inform you that high-pressure roof cleaning is a recipe for disaster. If a pressure washing wand can cut through skin then imagine what it can do to your fragile shingles.

Some roof cleaning product merchants will try to get around this issue by claiming that if you have patience a power washer shouldn’t be necessary. They say that their chemicals can be effective without pressure cleaning if only you’re willing to wait months for the stains to dissolve. I’m sorry but I just think that’s asking too much from the consumer.

So, you ask, if I already have the necessary components for a roof cleaning solution in my home then what are they? The core ingredient for a good roof cleaning mixture is household bleach. Chlorine or pool shock will also work fine. Using this chemical is the smartest thing you can do for your roof.

Putting all the parts together is very simple. Just add ten gallons of liquid chlorine or bleach to ten gallons of water from the spigot. You can also add a cap of liquid laundry detergent if you need some clinging action. Time to get out the ladder and prepare for action.

Now gently spray the mixture on your roof shingles. Remember, you should not need a power washer for this! Give the solution some time to work it’s magic and then rinse everything down very well with the garden hose.

A few final important notes. Make sure you have a helper on the ground to wet down any shrubbery around the perimeter of the home during chemical application. Also take great care to protect yourself from the bleach as it can be detrimental to your skin, lungs, and eyes.

If the girls have their Barbie, then the boy’s ultimate version will be the Transformers. I remember the glorifying feeling these toys have on me every time I see them in my room or even just in cartoons. Seldom will you meet people who dont know about them and the ever-fascinating characters.

1. Optimus Prime

He is depicted as a heroic, brave and compassionate character and has a strong sense of justice and righteousness. The original Optimus Prime transforms into a cab over semi truck then truck’s cab transforms into the robot mode of Prime himself, equipped with vast strength and armed with a laser rifle. Did you know that he’s name in Japan is Convoy?

2. Bumblebee

Of all the Transformers characters, Bumblebee is my favorite. Not only that he is adorably bad-ass but his prowess in Espionage proves to be perfect to his size (compared to other big transformers). Of all his transforming modes, The Volkswagen Beetle has been the most popular and my personal favorite too. And who could forget that unforgettable motto of his: “The least likely can be the most dangerous.”

3. Megatron

He is the worst guy of all in the Transformer universe. He is very powerful and utterly ruthless. His imposing robot form is dominated by his primary weapon - his arm-mounted fusion cannon and is best seen in his Jet form that does not only look slick but poses great danger because of speed and weapon’s attack capabilities up in the air.

4. Wheeljack

Wheeljack is the scientist of the Autobot forces. The weapons and gadgets, while invented for the benefit the Autobot, often bring great danger and introduce unpredictable elements into critical situations. Wheeljack is the most accomplished driver (while in car mode) among the Autobots and enjoys displaying his skill level through various road stunts.

5. Jazz

Jazz is the cool, stylish, and very competent member of the Autobots. He is the head of Special Operations and assigns the most dangerous assignments to himself. Jazz’s can adapt pretty well to whatever environment he finds himself in for he effortlessly tunes in to the local culture, assimilating and improvising, and making creative command decisions.

English Yew Taxus and European Silver Fir

March 3, 2009 by Ashley Landon

by Ashley Landon

The common yew is a conifer whose distribution has greatly decreased during the past centuries; today it is protected by law in most countries. In the Middle Ages, its wood was widely used to make bows, and, later, costly furniture, and so, with its slow rate of growth, the yew slowly disappeared from the forests.

The larch is a sun-loving, fast-growing tree that requires abundant light and clean air. It is resistant to frost (except when the leaves are young) and heat, and its large, cordate root system provides it with firm anchorage. It is a very attractive tree, especially with the fresh, green foliage of spring.

The wood is of high quality, with a great expanse of reddish-brown heartwood. It is very durable and is much used in the building of boats, wall-panelling, light furniture, wooden staircases, etc.

The related form Pseudotsuga glauca Mayr. grows in the Rocky Mountains at heights above 2000 metres. It has a thinner and less deeply furrowed bark, blue-green needles and cones with reflexed bracts. It has a slower rate of growth and is more suitable as an ornamental.

The Norway spruce is a typical tree of the mountain forests of central Europe and the northern European taiga. It has a narrow, conical crown with branches arranged in regular whorls, and grows to heights of more than 40 metres, in virgin stands up to 60 metres at the age of 400 to 700 Years. The bark is brown and furrowed. The leaves, rhomboid in section, are borne on peg-like projections, a typical characteristic of all spruces, which give the twig a rough surface when the leaves have fallen. The female flowers resemble small, erect reddish “candles” at first, but later change into pendant brown, elongate cones. The winged seeds are shed on warm and windy spring days.

The Norway spruce has a fairly shallow and spreading root system and is, therefore, easily uprooted by strong winds. It does not require a warm climate and is resistant to frosts. Its range in Europe extends to the polar regions and to altitudes up to the tree line. In hilly country it prefers cool and shady valleys. It grows well in shade but requires fertile soil and moist air. It is marked by great variation and occurs in a number of different forms. The soft and flexible wood is widely used in the building industry, and the bark yields tannins.
