The Best Thing About Household Organic Gardens

Could you have a yard that is never made use of? Can there be a chunk of land that’s just sitting there being wasted? Did you actually believe you could potentially grow your own vegetables? This is a short article about why growing a vegetable garden is smart for your health.

Fresh vegetables grown from gardens taste much better than those you buy in stores, or at least that’s what most gardeners say. The probability is this claim is valid and it doesn’t matter what the vegetables were used for. It might be because of the time and effort that goes into raising the vegetables or picking them when they’re ready. Assuming that the vegetables gratify your taste buds and those around you is all that matters. Raising the vegetables safely with no dangerous chemicals or preservatives will create the best possible food for you and your family.

A lot of the farmers and corporations today use pesticides on their vegetables for several reasons. Depending on where you get the vegetables from, it’s going to have been transported a far distance from where they grew. Often, they are picked prematurely and to keep them from rotting require preservatives. When they are covered with preservatives and bug killers, the nutrition that they deliver are often stripped away. Developmental and reproductive effects are some nasty side effects if you are exposed to pesticides for a long period of time. Vegetables might be damaging to a child because of pesticides. Without their bodies being developed fully enough to metabolize the chemicals, or to remove such substances.

Gardening isn’t only great for your health when you eat it, but while you are growing your garden. Thirty minutes a day in the garden is a big measure for weight loss and you will notice it. Every part of your body gets a unique workout when you are gardening. Your back, buttocks, arms, and legs will be beautifully toned after you have done it for awhile. When you stretch, whether it’s aiming to get to a weed or plant something, your flexibility will improve. Seeing a change in your body will happen more than likely by the time the crops are growing in your vegetable garden.

The more folks buy, the more the companies make. Chemical compounds and preservatives in our food will decrease if a large number of people chooses not to buy it. Not every person has enough space for a backyard garden, but commercial farming would lessen if more people chose to grow their own food.

A great way to add value to your home is through home improvement activities. If you are adding something like an in-ground pool or a new addition, this is especially true.

Even maintenance work such as repairing a leaky roof or adding new windows will also improve the value of your asset. If you do not have any pressing emergencies to fix, then perhaps you could take-on a smaller project. Like building a fence.

There are plenty of low cost projects you can do, so you can work within your budget. Here are few pointer for your next home improvement project.

You can achieve intriguing effects with interior lighting projects. You can change the whole feel of a room just by changing the lighting. Part of the technique is where you place the lights and how you position them. One potentially serious issue for the less experienced is running the wiring in the walls. Running wires externally to the walls is quite unsightly. It’s worth the effort to figure out how to do this properly. You can find plenty of information to help you. One extremely important concern is electrical safety. It’s important to be safe and have a qualified person double check your work.

Installing an aquarium that is recessed in a wall is another fun home improvement project. This can look truly beautiful when they are done right. There is nothing really difficult about this, either. But since you will need space behind the wall, the spot you choose is the key. Some people leave a small space behind the tank for easy access. It’s important to consider the lighting as well. If you want to run a saltwater reef tank, there are special factors to consider.

Investing some time and money into your bathroom can add value to your home very easily. Most of your remodeling money is simply not spent on the bathrooms in your house. Though it is not popular, many people do spend quite a bit of money remodeling their bathrooms.

People that like to be warm will install a baseboard heater for shower and bath times. A popular new edition for many bathrooms are elegant bathtubs. This room is a very private room and will therefore not be decorated as rooms are that are public. Once you are done, check to make sure you have proper aeration in the room and no leaks on your faucets.

Home improvement projects is a great way to bring family members together. You get to work as a team and you all get to enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done. But it’s also important to always work safely, no matter how small your job is.

Maintaining A Healthy Bird Feeder

Bird feeders can bring many wonderful creatures to your door, both local birds and the occasional traveler on migration. Though there are ongoing debates regarding how feeders affect a bird’s food gathering patterns, it is entirely possible to make your feeder a safe and healthy place for little visitors. A small amount of effort and attention can go along way in caring for your bird feeder.

When you set up a bird feeder you also have to be aware that squirrels and other creatures might come across it. They can cause havoc chewing through it and spreading the seeds all over the place. This will in turn attract other ground-feeding creatures. The best way to avoid this issue is to include a squirrel baffle which is placed below or above the feeder and this will stop that problem. Another thing you can do is place a dedicated squirrel feeder nearby to keep them away from the bird feeder.

One of the tips you can use to keep your bird feeder healthy for birds is to give it a shake before refilling it. This will loosen any stuck clumps which attract moisture and start going moldy. If there are any wet seeds that you can see you should clean out the bird feeder first. The hulls should also be cleaned regularly to prevent a buildup. You can just use a brush to clean this and keeping it near the feeder will make the job easier.

Every few weeks a feeder should be disinfected. The best approach is to disinfect the feeder by scrubbing it with a weak bleach solution, which would consist of 2 gallons of water and one fourth cup of bleach. During wet weather more frequent disinfecting is required. It is important that the feeder be completely dry before more seed is added.

If you live somewhere where there is constant wet weather during either your winter or summer season, you should invest in a covered bird feeder. If using an exposed feeder, just put out a tiny bit of feed that will be used up in one day. An additional option is to place the entire feeder under shelter.

Suet should only be put out during cold seasons. In hot weather, the suet can melt and end up sticking to a bird’s feathers. It can also create quite a mess.

Along with bird feeder care, you should also take care of the food storage. The seeds must be kept in a sealed airtight container that is always dry. The best containers to use are the plastic garbage cans with tight lids. This will also keep rodents away. Suet should be stored in the freezer.

If a dead or sick bird is ever spotted at or around the feeding area, remove the bird food for a couple of weeks in order to disperse healthy birds. This will lessen the possibility of disease spreading. It is also a good practice to report sick or dead birds to wildlife officials so that they can monitor the local bird population.

If you want to enjoy watching birds from the comfort of your home, then take care to maintain your bird feeder and take measures to eliminate rodents and prevent diseases. It is also helpful to check consumer resources for best products before purchasing a new feeder.

Every spring brings that time: time to open your above ground pool for the swimming season of summer. This easy guide will get your above ground pool open and running in practically no time.

1. Start by siphoning off all water that might be collected atop your pool’s cover. if you will be using an electric siphon pump, it is a good idea to place a plastic frisbee or similar item between the pump and the cover.

Using Logs or Masonry For Your Garden Steps

November 29, 2008 by Gary Antosh

by Keith Markensen

When you’re planning the landscape of your yard or garden, consider adding a set of steps. You can use anything from round-cut logs to concrete, brick, or stone to create the look you want. Each material varies in difficulty, and also in the style the stairs will add to your landscape.

When planning the size of your steps, try to make them similar to indoor steps, particularly if they are in an area where you will use them often. The tread should measure about 10 inches from front to back, and each should rise about 7 and a half inches. Make sure that the treads are a little lower in the front of the step than in the back, or rain water may collect in your steps.

If you are using anything other than round logs to make your steps, be sure they have a good foundation. It should be in the ground about 6 inches below the frost line to make the steps stable.

Although concrete may not be the most attractive material for garden steps, it is often used. To make concrete steps, first you’ll need a form for pouring the concrete. These wooden boxes should be placed on top of each other, forming your stairway. Mix 1 part Portland cement, 3 parts sand, and 6 parts gravel, and then pour the cement into the form. The treads should be made level using the flat edge of a board.

Another way to make concrete steps is by using pre-formed concrete blocks. While you’ll still need a foundation, it is much easier to build a stairway from concrete blocks. Make sure that you bond the blocks together well. You may also want to consider coating the stairway with a thin layer of concrete to obtain a good appearance. Brick steps are made in the same way as concrete blocks, although they do require a little more masonry skill due to the many joints.

The main difficulty of constructing stone steps is finding the stone. While you may be fortunate enough to have stones available on your property or some stones left when you had the chance to work on patio landscaping, otherwise you’ll need to purchase them. This can make them an expensive choice, although they are also a very attractive and rustic way of building steps. If your stones are very large, you won’t need any masonry bonding. If the steps are freestanding, you’ll need to use mortar.

Wooden rounds cut from logs make beautiful steps, and they are easy to construct. Just set the bottom round into the earth. The next one should placed so that it partially covers the bottom log, leaving a riser. Fill in the ground under the upper round, and then repeat this step until your stairway is complete. This is also an excellent solution for a long slope that is slightly too steep for just a path. Logs can be set into the earth to provide occasional steps along the way.

Beautify Your Yard

by Kent Higgins

Building costs today make large houses prohibitively expensive, but you can extend your living space by making full use of your outdoor space. Even your indoor spaces can look larger when they overlook a beautiful lawn and garden. Using glass walls, decks, and other tricks can help achieve this effect, as can using outdoor terraces to increase the usefulness of the space.

There are many strategies for making your terrace, garden, or lawn more livable. Fences, vines, shrubbery, shade trees, and beautiful flowers can make your outdoor space perfect for entertaining and relaxing. When planning your yard or creating a terraced area, you may want to consider installing an electric outlet, which can be used for running lights, a radio, or other amenities that will make your outdoor space more versatile. Installing the outlet now will be a lot easier than when your yard is well established. A barbecue or fireplace can add the excitement of dining outdoors.

One way to liven up your garden is to install a terraced area with a vine roof grown on a lattice. Grape vines can be an excellent solution, and have the added bonus of providing delicious fruit. Other vines which will grow quickly to fill in the space, like hyacinth or gourd vines, can also work for a lattice roof. These will provide a nice cool area during the hot summer months.

If you decide on a terrace to help make use of your outdoor space, try not to make the terraced area stand out in stark contrast to the rest of your yard. One way to blend the two spaces together is to add greenery near the edges of your terrace. This can be accomplished with a variety of flowers or vines in pots, baskets, or other containers. Growing plants on your terrace can help it seem more a part of your garden.

If the bare walls of your house seem harsh when compared with your lush green yard, soften the lines and disguise the material of your walls with pots of plants, blossoming shrubs, or small trees planted right next to the walls. Create interest by combining items at different heights instead of using only short plants or tall trees. These can help blend your walls with the terrace and surrounding yard.

If your terrace is frequently used by everyone in the family, consider adding a small pool. Add a roof to provide some shade from the summer sun. You can use a variety of materials including wood, corrugated plastic, metal, or glass. Glass is one of the best options because it lets sunlight in, but will keep you dry in case of rain. The “parasol” roof can be an excellent choice in hot climates. This roof extends from the walls of the house 4 feet or more, providing some shade.

Outdoor backyard spaces will get much more use if it is more accessible from inside your home. Adding a door from inside can make it easier to use this outdoor space\, instead of walking around the outside of your house. Adding a terrace off a porch, or a pathway surrounded by landscaping plants leading to the terrace, can increase its usefulness. Hard flooring or a serving counter on the terrace can also increase the amount of time you will use it.

An attractive terrace with a roof, fireplace, and low wall can be quite useful. In fact, as a replacement for plain grass, terraces are an excellent idea. Providing shelter from the elements can help make your outdoor space much more useful. Shelter can increase the season for outdoor living into the early spring and late fall.
